When deer day arrives .... Smoke curls up from a central fire, greetings from the other hunt camps soon arrive, and the hunters sit around the fire talking about the deer they bagged, the ones they missed, and the ones they hope to bag. The stories we hear year after year but never grow tired of.

On this page we share stories of our deer encounters.  By reading these stories we can develope our own hunting techniques and learn from what others used or did in different situations.

Growing up with world known "JACK MINER Bird Sanctuary” in our back yards we really take for granted to abundance of geese we hear on a regular basis.  Everyday about 4 o’clock the geese fly over by the hundreds towards the lake.  Our house, just on the edge of town is the direct flight back to Lake Erie for them. With elevated goose numbers bring some of the BEST of the BEST goose callers.  These callers have produced some great calls right here in Ontario.  Join us as we share tips and tricks as well as some great stories about the great CANADA GOOSE.

                                            WILD TURKEY

                                            Picture
From egg to old age, after all, this bird is on the lunch menu of virtually every predator in the forest, including snakes, skunks, raccoons, foxes, bobcats, coyotes, crows, owls and hawks.
So how challenging can they really be to hunt? More so than you’d think. Actually, the constant threat of predators has forced the wild turkey to become a master of escape. And for that it has developed some remarkable life-saving defences, such as incredible eyesight, hearing and speed.
Turkeys can spot motion at extreme distances, and they have phenomenal peripheral vision—in the order of 320 degrees. If you can see a turkey’s head, it’s almost certain that it can see you, so don’t move until its head is down or out of sight. To top it all off, turkeys can see colours, meaning they’re likely to pick up on any broach in your camo.
Just as refined is the turkey’s sense of hearing. The bird has an uncanny ability to pinpoint the exact source of a sound from distances of up to two kilometres. And when a turkey senses danger, it can burst off the ground as fast as a ruffed grouse and fly off at a top speed of approximately 80 kilometres an hour. And over short distances, it’s faster than a white-tailed deer.  Enjoy these stories of one of the hardest to hunt the Wild Turkey.

                                            ESSEX COUNTY PREDATORS......
The howls of coyotes have become familiar nighttime sounds across the county, even in the suburbs. When you hear their song, you know that they are there.

The coyote is perhaps the most adaptable and controversial predator. Intelligent and secretive, they are more often heard than seen. Yet, unlike other predators, coyotes survive comfortably in suburban and even urban areas.

                                            MOOSE

                                            Picture
Crouched behind a large spruce tree, I watched in amazement as a massive bull displayed his dominance on a nearby ridge. Powerful grunts followed by vigorous raking captured the undivided attention of two cows standing a short distance away. It was early October, peak of the moose rut. The lovesick moans held his attention but weren't enough to close the deal. So I stepped it up a notch. After emitting a series of low grunts, I grabbed a nearby log and raked the tree branches before me. Evolving into a show of strength, dominance and will, the huge bull postured for the better part of a half-hour. Then, off to my right, a second bull appeared. Intrigued by the commotion and in search of a companion of his own, things were getting interesting. Doing an about-face, the larger bull gathered his two cows and vanished into the shadows of the forest. The newcomer, although attempting to follow, soon gave up in frustration.

This is just one of the great experiences that you can read about on our moose page. For most folks in our area a trip to the near north is required but usually worth talking about for years to come.
