                                            NIKON D5100 COMES TO TOWN!

My first impressions of the Nikon D5100 are positive:

                                            Picture
The camera is very compact, lightweight and easy to handle.  The camera can be operated with one hand as most of the buttons and controls are located conveniently on the right side.  The display screen has a swivel to it, which makes shooting at different angles very easy.  It is very simple to switch to Live view using the spring switch on the mode dial, although I did find that the camera did not respond as quickly in the Live view.

The Effects shooting mode is a great addition,

                                            Picture
easy to use and fun to experiment with.  There are 7 different filters that can be applied to both still images and movies.   My favourite is the Selective Colour, you can create some cool effects without the need of post editing.  The D5100 also takes great photos in low light/indoor conditions. The light is very balanced and there is very little, if any, noise.

I was very impressed with the colour of the photos,

                                            Picture
they were very bright and crisp.  The continuous shooting function also produced some great photos, very clean and quick focus on moving objects.  Overall, it is very easy to use and capable of delivering consistently good results-simple and intuitive.

                                            Picture
I recently was fortunate to have the opportunity to try out a NEW camera from NIKON.  Being in the market for a new video camera for the treestand, I thought this camera would work out perfectly.  This camera is packed full of options for both video and still pictures.  When hiking you can take still shots and once on location you may wish to video that elusive buck as he enters the field.
The Nikon Coolpix P100 is capable of doing some extraordinary things. It's numerous shooting options along with a 26x megazoom lens makes it incomparable. Options like excellent AF speeds and decent image quality.  The video shooting is fun too with exciting modes and settings for near endless experimentation. Having 1080p HD-quality movie recording is just the icing on the cake.

                                            Picture
The P100's has a stereo microphone above the viewfinder and a movie record button on the camera back. It has a compact body with some strategically positioned material in the handgrip and thumb rest areas.  The deeply carved handgrip portion of the body leaves space from the lens barrel for average size fingers. The index finger falls naturally to the shutter button and lens zoom control. The overall control layout is simple and straightforward. A horizontal dial above the thumb rest lets you quickly change shutter speed and aperture settings as well as zip through images and videos in playback. The rest of the controls are pretty standard: Playback, Menu, and Delete buttons and a round directional pad with an OK button at its center. The pad is used for navigating menus adjusting timer, flash, focus, and exposure compensation settings, and searching through your photos and movies. There's an electronic viewfinder and a vari-angle LCD for framing up your shots. The LCD pulls out from the body and can be tilted up or down, but it does not swing out horizontally from the body.
The feel is overall very nice and very compact considering the lens and all that the camera can do. Though you really don't want to use a zoom like that without a support, the camera does have sensor-shift image stabilization that Nikon calls Optical VR, the stabilization does an excellent job of minimizing blur but you should definitely use your tri-pod if planning on doing some fully extended footage.
The Nikon Coolpix P100 is one of those cameras that you’ll love for all that it can do. One of the things I liked most was that I could extend the lens and look way out over the field and see what was coming without having my eyes in a pair of binoculars.  I could see as far a my binoculars without the strain on my eyes.
However, for all its strengths, the camera's still photos could have been a bit better quality.   If you can overlook the photo quality in exchange for the heaps of video options than the P100 is for you.

Jimmy BIG TIME – 2009 Season

                                            Picture
This film focuses on the slightly surreal interactions among Jimmy Big Time and his two side kicks.  Jimmy has no credibility whatsoever, but wants us to believe he is a true Outdoorsmen. In front of the camera he is both awkward and immensely entertaining. Throughout the film Jimmy claims he is the “Father of Outdoor Television”, even to some of the Worlds most renowned Wilderness Outfitters, who look at him strangely. He can’t shoot, he can’t call and he continues to try the patience of his co-stars who bow at his every whim.  This film is a complete mockery of the outdoors television industry and how some people are just outrageous.  I would however like to see more action in the field and less backstage presence. The Dead Down Wind Commercial was Hilarious! If you enjoy Mockumentary productions and the outdoors, this film is for you!
