Going away to a hunting camp for a week would be quite the new challenge. This trip would also mark the first time I’d be bow hunting and shooting from a tree stand. All these new aspects made me that much more excited to go on this new adventure...

WE caught this guy on camera  about 1/2 mile away, he came in to work his scrape, GRUNTING like a fool.  Trev stopped him in his tracks at about 20 yards with a 12 Guage shotgun.

The goose season this year has been one that is full of great adventures.  I can't begin to describe the excitement when the callers get the geese locked up and coming in.  The decoys are placed just right and the wind is perfect.  The sun begins to rise and the fog begins to lift.
To some the hunt is more about numbers, but to me the laughter and stories in the blind and way the guys work the geese is the thrill of the hunt.  Check out some of our pictures from this years hunts

For some reason they didn't want to finish, and we decide to light 20-25yds outside our decoys, but still within range. We jumped up and they jumped. We took 4 mallard drakes....off to a super start....

When asked how important pheasant season is to me, I would compare opening day to my Anniversary....  As bad as this may sound, my wife acknowledges the truth to this fact and life goes on.  This season began the same as any other year...

I just got back today from moose hunting. My moose hunt started after seeing fresh tracks Monday night, first we decided to relocate my trail camera...

It was the best of times!

                                            Picture
I had been invited to come back north for the third year to hunt with Rob Dickson on opening day  for Illinois Northern Zone waterfowl season, but he had just called to let me know he hadn’t seen much but four geese using his pond. Now I live about 145 miles away and while I have driven further and come home empty handed many times the thought of making this drive again with a limited chance at harvesting anything brought me down...

The year began with the ambition of getting into bow hunting. After years of hunting with my dad and brother with rifle / shotgun, I thought it was time to try something new. After months of searching and deciding to buy new or used, I decided to buy a BRAND NEW Excalibur Exocet 200 crossbow from our local archery store "ATKINS ARCHERY"...

                                            GOOSE HUNTING TIPS...

                                            Picture
The area where you are planning to hunt should be thoroughly scouted in advance, say three to four days earlier. As a matter of fact, since it is your first time, take the help of a guide. This is considered to be one of the most significant goose hunting tips. Gather information about the different bodies of water which the birds are likely to use as a take off and landing platform, their regular movements and their feeding patterns and feeding fields....

                                            EARLY DEER SEASON TIPs...

                                            Picture
Scent control is a major problem when hunting in the heat. Many if not most bow hunters do an excellent job of washing their clothes in unscented detergent, storing them in airtight containers and spraying themselves with odor eliminators, when they go out in the field....

                                            Picture
When we arrived at the hunt camp after a long 17 hour drive we were pumped and ready to hunt. Unfortunately the accommodations left something to be desired, the hunt camp looked nice until we were led to our room. It was the mud room, there were two beds in it and I didn’t really care too much about the sleeping arrangements anyway, I was there to hunt....

                                            From the EDITOR:

                                            Picture
                                            Why the GREED I ask.

As most of you know, it is hunting season.  We work long and hard at establishing areas to hunt and harvest our fall game. We train our dogs and work them in the water. It is now hunting season, which to some seems to be a competition. Some of us are better than others at calling geese and some of us have better chances on getting birds because of the location we have permission to hunt.  I have to ask myself though why the GREED?

When you can hear someone calling in the birds and actually can see they have them locked up, why do others feel the need to continue calling hard and try to steal the birds.  Do we like it when others try to steal our flock?  If someone has worked the flock, why can't we let them try to get them instead of stealing them.  I just don't understand. Also the guys that as soon as the hunt is over are saying how the other guys down the creek can't shoot or those guys can't call at all.  Do we really have to be so negative towards other hunters.  Every hunter has to start somewhere and not everyone is a sharp shooter.  These things come with time.  I just don't get it. Hunting is our heritage.

Sharing the adventure is what it is about, the friendship that is shared inside the blind and the memories that are made. Please take some time to TEACH others the outdoors and not always be so GREEDY!

To you new hunters out there, don't let others discourage you.  You will get it and when you do it will be very rewarding.

                                            Happy Hunting!

                                            BUCK FEVER

                                            Picture
                                                  Everyone's heard of "buck fever"
You've been sitting in your stand for a few hours and haven't seen much. You hear twigs break and leaves rustle and crunch. It sounds louder than the squirrels you heard frolicking before. You start to wonder what it could be. Your heart starts to beat faster. Suddenly a large buck trots into view. A rush of energy runs through your body. It's a bit too far and the shot isn't quite good enough. Eagerly you wait on the buck to come closer. By now your heart is beating out of your chest, your hands are trembling, and your knees are knocking into one another. After what felt like hours, the big old buck is finally within range. You lock your sights on him and squeeze the trigger. What a rush!

As the days begin to get shorter I am reminded of not so long ago when the leaves whirled fast and the trees stood stark and bare. The skies hung with various shades of grey and the pungent smell of burning leaves fill the air. In my youth this was an indication of only one thing, COON hunting season was very near.

I grew up loving every moment of living in the country. I enjoyed walking to the small fish pond with my dog, running through open fields, neighborhood ball games and riding my bike with friends.  As I got older I drove the old 4x4 Chevy truck on the back roads to get to a friend's houses and had summer jobs in the community....

Ok, guys and gals the great people at “Everything Outdoors” are having a Story Contest. The story will be judged on content, creativity, and overall reading enjoyment.  Pictures are a plus. Maximum 1000 words. Post the story in the forum for everyone to read and enjoy. Keep in mind this is not a big buck contest.  Rack size has no bearing on the winner. No game is too small for a great story. It could be a buck you hunted all season and was finally successful or your first deer.  Maybe it’s a story about your first turkey adventure, ANY hunting story will do. I will post the winner on the site and contact you via private message to obtain your shipping information so you can receive your prize package.  You must be a registered member in the forum to qualify.

Deadline for all entries is April 30th, 2010. Winner will be announced May 15th.  Post all your stories in the forum.
                                            * The winner will receive a "Kelly’s sporting goods" hat and an "Everything Outdoors.ca" diaphram turkey call.
                                            * The story will also be posted on the website.

                                            Good luck to EVERYONE!

A lone deer slowly grazes across the wheat field and again I am left staring at my decoys in doubt that a turkey will even pass by before I have to leave to go to work.   DOES HE SHOW UP?

Be sure to be out in the woods early and do your scouting while looking for those hard to find DEER antler sheds.  With that in mind I have added a TURKEY TIPS discussion in the FORUM.  Stop in and share some of you favorite tips and maybe learn one or two along the way.

Some of us hunt for years before having this kind of a morning.

Eric and Paul got 2 turkeys at almost the same time. Paul was on the left and had shot a tom with an 11.5" beard and Eric on the right had a 10.5" beard. These were both their first turkey's that they had ever shot. Good start eh.

Paul was shooting a Browning BPS 12 gauge with Remington Premier Magnum 3 inch #5 shot. Eric Tremblay was using a Remington 870 12 gauge with the same shells. He shot his out of the air at 35 yards.

Well the family and I took a nice little ride to some of our favorite spots looking for wildlife and to our surprise we seen 65 turkeys and 43 deer (3 monster bucks) all in different spots and from the warmth of our truck, the bucks still had their head gear.
So remember even in the coldest of days we can still enjoy the outdoors!
